No matter what age, every man wishes to be a pirate. Its true. Whether its being able to carry a sword, sail the open seas feeling free, scavage the unsuspecting sea-farer, or my personal favorite…the eyepatch and parrot! Now as some of you may or may not know, September 19 is the annual International Talk Like a Pirate Day! It is required for all members of society to utter at the very least a hearty, “Arr!!”
It all started with two guys (known as Cap’n Slappy and Ol’ Chumbuckets aka The Pirate Guys!) They began playing racquetball starting uttering pirate curses at each other. One thing led to another and it became a habit on Sept. 19. One day they got gutsy and emailed Dave Barry (the renowned funnyman columnist and author). He actually replied, liked the idea and wrote a column on the two geniuses! It was then official. September 19, is now and forever will be International Talk Like a Pirate Day.
And for those of you who are not completely up-to-date with current Pirate Slang the two fellows mentioned above has created a “How To” section of their webpage talklikeapirate.com. It contains common verbage; advanced pirate language (for those who feel brave enough to venture the murky waters of language beyond the basic ”Arr!”); Pirate Pick Up Lines (WARNING! Remember, pirates are not the most polite or …um… innocent in the pick up line department); or if you are feeling that you have had too much grog (grog – n – see grog; An alcoholic drink, usually rum diluted with water), there is even some pirate lingo in German. And finally for those sailing the seven seas of the cyberspace way, there is for your viewing pleasure, Chatting Like a Pirate.
I remember on one TLAPD I was in college, and me and three of my mateys decide to add in pirate garb (and by garb I mean a nice looking eyepatch, beard and plastic hook). All was going well until my professor (apparently not enjoy Pirate-Speak) told us to disregard the garb or be wary of walkig the plank! We quickly (although relunctantly) dropped the act.
So remember when speaking like a pirate, be safe and careful what ye says matey, you do not want to start a skirmish ye cannot finish! So remember, September 19, is International Talk Like a Pirate Day!! Avast!
